A Century Celebration on Centre Street

Spanning almost a century, Calgary's Centre Street Bridge Nears 100th Anniversary

Constructed at a cost of $365,000 in 1916, to replace the old steel truss MacArthur Bridge that was destroyed in a flood, Calgary's Centre Street Bridge has linked the city's north and south for nearly a century. Spanning 178 metres across the Bow River, the iconic bridge was adorned with four massive lions, modeled after the famous brass lions in London's Trafalgar Square.

The benefactor of a major renovation in 2000, the bridge was closed for an entire year and the original four lions replaced (one is still on display at City Hall).

Now re-opened for over a decade, the bridge is scheduled to undergo another transformation in the coming months as part of a project from The City of Calgary. Scheduled to be completed this summer, the project will see crews making improvements to the feature lighting on Centre Street Bridge.

The City of Calgary is replacing the old bridge feature lighting with a new Light Emitting Diode (LED) system. The new system will improve the lighting of the four lion pavilions, the bridge archways and will accentuate the architectural features of this important heritage landmark.
