Public Art: Memorial Drive

A stretch of Memorial Drive in the community of Parkdale is about to get a little artsier.

The sculpture, by New York artist Brian Tolle, will be integrated into an existing storm water outfall along the Bow River pathway system. The intent of the piece is to heighten public awareness of the interface between Calgary's storm water infrastructure and natural landscape. "I was intrigued by the fact that the city drew its drinking water directly from the Bow River," said Tolle in a City of Calgary blog. "After having visited the Rockies, I was certain that the mountains would play a major role in the sculptural design."

Dubbed The Memorial Public Art and Plaza project, the installation is a collaborative process with both Tolle's piece and the landscape architecture firm marc boutin architectural collaborative inc.

"We are thrilled to share the intriguing concept developed for Calgarians by international artist Brian Tolle," said Rachael Seupersad, superintendent, Public Art. "This represents his first time working in Canada, and yet through extensive research and interdisciplinary collaboration, he has succeeded in presenting us with a piece that reflects our city's unique physicality, celebrates our natural environment and shares and important message with Calgarians."
