Chinook Centre Announces Major Expansion

Calgary's biggest mall might be getting a whole lot bigger. Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited, owner of Chinook Centre in southwest Calgary, has announced expansion plans that would add one million sq. ft. to the mall's existing 1.4 million sq. ft.

The news comes just after Nordstrom's announced they would be moving into the mall in the fall of 2014, marking the American retailer's first foray into the Canadian market. "It's exciting to finally have this opportunity to better serve our Canadian customers closer to home and we can't wait to open our doors," said Erik Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom, Inc.

"Cadillac Fairview has been instrumental in helping us get started in Canada, and we're thrilled to be part of these premier shopping destinations. While we're fortunate to have many loyal Canadian customers who've shopped with us over the years, we recognize we're new here and that we have to earn our customers' business. We look forward to what we will learn and are grateful for the chance to better serve our Canadian customers."

The addition of Nordstrom's, along with the recently announced Target – set to move into the space vacated by Zellers next May – are expected to boost the mall's annual sales past $1 billion. In a story in The Calgary Herald, Terry Napper, Chinook Centre's general manager, said the mall's rolling 12-month total for retail sales at the end of August was $720 million including all 225 retailers in 1.4 million square feet.
