New Path to Biking Downtown

Construction has begun on downtown Calgary's first cycle track.

The two-way bike lane travels along the east of Seventh Street SW between the Bow River pathway and Eighth Avenue. The track has a onemetre wide concrete barrier to height of a sidewalk curb to help improve travel on the street. "This project is one that is responding to the rising number of people who choose to ride bicycles into the downtown," said Tom Thivener, City of Calgary bicycle coordinator. "We've seen cycling trips in the downtown rise 20 per cent over the past year and 35 per cent over the past five years. The new roadway will provide the predictable space for people who ride bicycles and those who walk and drive."

The design of the bike lane will also provide a heightened sense of safety for cyclists who may want to ride in the downtown core but are discouraged by high traffic volume.

"The City needs to provide transportation choices for Calgarians and this project, these cycle tracks, will offer a comfortable space making cycling a real choice for even more citizens," said Mac Logan, Transportation general manager.
