Riverwalk Phase III
The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) has announced the completion of the third phase of RiverWalk. The pathway now stretches two kilometres along the Bow River from Centre Street Bridge through East Village and around Fort Calgary to Ninth Avenue S.E. "We're halfway there," said Michael Brown, president and CEO, CMLC. "RiverWalk is a four kilometer long pathway that links neighbourhoods from Centre Street all the way to Lindsey Park. This phase marks the midpoint in its delivery."
The walkway was the result of public input by Calgarians sought by the CMLC in 2008. RiverWalk includes dedicated cycle and pedestrian lanes, emergency services call boxes and enhanced pathway lighting. Since the opening of Phase I, RiverWalk Plaza has become an active outdoor space which includes markets, festivals and outdoor film screenings.
RiverWalk is just one piece of the vision for the East Village. The vision for the community is one of a mixed-use, inner city neighbourhood with 11,000 residents and key cultural and recreational amenities like the National Music Centre, St. Patrick's Island and the proposed new Central Library. In the New Year, the CMLC will begin the planning for the final phases of the walkway with a schedule yet to be determined.
Do you enjoy the new Riverwalk?
