Arrowwood School reopens after April 2012 fire

The Arrowwood Community School had its grand reopening today, less than a year after being ravaged by a fire started by an arsonist in April of last year.

About 200 people gathered in the school's gymnasium to celebrate the reopening as several school board members, members of the community spoke and classes recited poems or sang songs. "In a lot of ways, this school is the backbone of the community," said Eric Ingraham, school council member.

Ingraham added the experience of the school fire will never be forgotten and the students learned that a sense of community spans beyond their own community.

On April 20, 2012 the school was one of five fires lit that night — and resulted in $4 million in damages. Thereon Majoras was charged with five counts of arson to property, two counts of mischief over $5,000, two counts of mischief under $5,000 and three counts of breach of an undertaking.

"He's a past student," Bill Graff, fire chief of the Northwest Fire Protection Association, told the Calgary Herald in a story published April 26."We haven't really heard why (allegedly) he did it."

To aid in the reconstruction, the CREB® Charitable Foundation donated $2,500 to the school.
