City Initiative Recognized by Governor General

A Calgary initiative celebrating century old homes in the city has been recognized by Canada's Governor General.

Century Homes Calgary's volunteer organizers were awarded the 2012 Governor General's history Award for Excellence in CommunityProgramming, one of the top honours an organization can receive in the field of history and heritage said the City of Calgary blog.

The Century Homes Calgary initiative saw residents of homes built during the city's first building boom in 1912 research the history of their homes and in turn display their findings on the property. There were 508 historic homes that took part in the initiative across the city.

"We wanted to increase awareness and appreciation of Calgary's heritage homes by engaging the people who live in them," said Cynthia Klaassen, co-chair of the organization committee and president of the Calgary Heritage Initiative Society. "The number of people who signed up to do research and display their love of their century homes with signs and banners was overwhelming."

Century Homes Calgary was made possible due to the many facets of the organizing committee, which included The City of Calgary's Heritage Planning team, City council's Strategic Initiative Fund, the Calgary Public Library, the Calgary Heritage Authority and volunteers. Planning hasalready begun for Century Homes Calgary 2013.
