Peace Bridge Takes Sixth in World's Top Public Spaces

Calgary's Peace Bridge has been ranked as one of the world's top 10 public spaces of 2012 by an international architecture publication.

"The intent was to build a functional bridge for pedestrians and cyclists that would be special for Calgary and become apiece of infrastructure recognized around the world," said Gordon Stewart, director of the City's Transportation infrastructure. designboom, an online publication with 4.2 million monthly readers around the world ranked the structure at number six in a grouping which also included projects from Columbia, Spain and Denmark.

designboom stated, "public architecture has the unique position — and almost necessity — to be inherently entwined within its context and impact a larger population usually performing perfunctory daily tasks, such as walking to the store of relaxing at a park."

Designed by Santiago Calatrava, commissioned by the City and built by Graham Infrastructure, the Peace Bridge didn't make much of a peaceful appearance in Calgary due to more than a year of delays and its $24.5 million price tag; however, residents are taking advantage of the crossing with over 6,000 Calgarians using the bridge each day.
