Calgary's State of Emergency Lifted

Calgary has lifted its state of emergency as of 10:16 a.m. this morning.

While the state of emergency — first declared June 20 — has been lifted, the Municipal Emergency Plan (MEP) remains in effect as recovery and relief efforts continue. Under the MEP, the Calgary Emergency Management Agency and other partners will continue to co-ordinate recovery and relief efforts resulting from flooding. "Our work is now transitioning from city-wide emergency response to localized recovery and relief efforts," said Bruce Burrell. "Now that the majority of our city is functional again, focus will shift to specific buildings and populations that are dealing with long-term flooding impacts. Public safety has always been, and continues to be, our first priority."

Even with the state of emergency lifted, Calgarians are reminded to stay off the rivers and avoid riverbanks, which have become badly eroded.

"Many people have been devastated by this flood and their personal recovery will be a long and difficult journey," said Burrell. "We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all Calgarians for their outpouring of generosity these past two weeks and encourage everyone to continue helping those in need. Rebuilding our city starts with rebuilding our people."

As far as the many reception centres set up in the city, the registration centre located at Centre Street Church has closed.

Those displaced by the flood that are in need of housing but have not yet been able to register can call 3-1-1 and indicate your needs. The City is reminding displaced residents to apply to the Province's Disaster Recovery Program found here .
