Homeless Foundation 30 - Unit in Beltline
The Calgary Homeless Foundation is planning on building a 30-unit building of affordable housing in the Beltline.Finding rental vacancies is proving to be a challenge in Calgary, so many people are having a difficult time finding affordable housing. In order for the Calgary Homeless Foundation to create 1,000 units of supportive housing by 2018, they have to look at designing and building housing. The organization has conditionally purchased a property at 222 15 Ave SW.
The Calgary Homeless Foundation wants to redevelop the existing property to be a 30-unit assisted living facility for men and women, which will include 24/7 staffing.
The property will feature small, self-contained bachelor units, a communal kitchen, a gathering space and counselling space.
The Cost Benefits of Housing First report from the Calgary Homeless Foundation found that building housing may cost more at the beginning, but in the long run it reduces cost for society. The report based on 72 individuals that were provided with housing and support, which costs about $18,000 per year. "The annual cost of housing with support, and public system use was reduced from $46,000 to $22,000 or an annual cost savings of $34,000 per each of the individuals housed," the report said. Overall this showed an annual cost savings of $2.5 million for 72 individuals.
Calgary's 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness is focused on ending homelessness by 2018 by taking a Housing First approach.
