Calgary Gets Passing Grade in Quality of Life Survey

Calgarians gave their city good marks overall in Calgary Foundation's latest Vital Signs report, however housing and transportation remain their top concerns.

Issued yearly by The Calgary Foundation, the report measures the vitality of our communities, identifies significant trends, and assigns grades in a range of areas critical to quality of life. This year, Calgarians gave their city a B+, with a C+ in "Getting Around" as well as "Housing" pulling down the city's grade point average.

In the housing category, respondents listed increasing density to limit urban sprawl, affordability of rental housing and affordability of home ownership as the top concerns.

The majority of Calgarians (60 per cent) questioned said they knew their neighbours well enough to seek help or offer assistance, and 67 per cent felt they could make a difference in their community.

Four areas were singled out as most responsible for enhancing the well-being of Calgarians were learning, citizen engagement, living standards and immigrant newcomers.

The city got top marks in "Sports & Recreation" and "Safety", earning a B+ in both categories.

The survey asked 846 citizens to assign grades, choosing their top three priorities and adding their comments on things that are working well in each of the key issue areas.
