Calgary Gets 10 New Schools

Alberta's Premier is following through on a promise she made to Albertan's to build and modernize schools throughout the province.

Many new schools and schools to be modernized have been announced over the past couple months in Calgary. Most recently an announcement was made by the Alberta government to build 10 more new schools and modernize one more. "Last spring, I committed to building 50 schools and modernizing 70 others and that is exactly what we are doing," said Premier Alison Redford. "I'm thrilled to announce the 70th school modernization in Calgary today and so excited that families are also going to benefit from 10 new schools in this city."

The 10 new schools will include six public, one francophone and three Catholic schools for communities in Calgary's suburbs. These new schools will allow about 7,600 more students in various grades from kindergarten to Grade 12 to attend school.

The government, the Calgary Arts Academy, the Calgary Stampede and its Calgary Youth Campus have partnered together to turn the historic Weston Bakery at Stampede Park into a modern learning facility. Students from Calgary Arts Academy will move out of one of its Calgary School Board-owned spaces to the revamped Stampede Park facility.

"Students deserve schools tailored to meet their educational programming needs, and they deserve to attend classes in their communities, near their homes," said Ric McIver, minister of infrastructure. "That's why we are building and modernizing schools across Alberta so students have access to the bright, open, state-of-the-art facilities they need to do their best work and fulfill their potential."

The new schools and schools undergoing modernization will focus on creating a healthy learning and working environment by using natural light and advanced ventilation systems.

A time frame on when construction for the 10 new schools is expected to start and be completed has not yet been announced.

Currently all 70 modernization projects have been announced, and 42 out of the 50 new school projects are underway. Sometime this month the remaining eight schools will be announced.
