New Schools Announced for Calgary and Airdrie

Calgary's community of Aspen Woods and west Airdrie will see new schools being built.

The Aspen Woods school will benefit about 750 Kindergarten to Grade 6 Roman Catholic Separate School District students, and the Airdrie school will serve 600 Rocky View School Division Kindergarten to Grade 4 students. These are two of the six new Alberta schools being announced this December. In total, the schools will provide space for 4,200 students.

"These schools advance our promise to invest in Alberta's families and communities and are part of our Building Alberta Plan. We're committed to building 50 new schools and modernizing 70 more to ensure that students and communities have the world-class facilities they need to learn," said Premier Alison Redford.

The new school that will be built in Aspen Woods will help address enrolment pressures in those growing communities.

"One of the cornerstones of our Building Alberta Plan is education and preparing our kids for their future. Under the leadership of Premier Redford, we are delivering on the commitment for 50 new schools and modernizing 70 schools," said Jeff Johnson, minister of education.

One Calgary school that won't be hosting students in the future is Elbow Park Elementary School. It was recently announced that the historic school would be torn down rather than be rebuilt after being damaged during the June floods. Built in 1926, preliminary estimates for rebuilding the school came in at $9 million. The new Elbow Park school is expected to be completed in 2017.
