Summer in the city

Calgary's inner city is a hustle and bustle of activities. A hub of some of Calgary's best restaurants, pubs and shops, there's a lot of the inner city yet to be discovered. CREBNow has compiled five things to do in the city that might not have been at the top of your radar.

Picnic in the Park

While portions of Prince's Island Park are still closed due to flood damage, the area - named for Calgary lumberman Peter Prince - is still one of the most beautiful and scenic spots in the city. For a modern spin on an old classic, the Island's River Cafe offers up summer picnic baskets. Baskets include treats like Ocean Wise salmon and rosemary smoked almonds. For those attending Shakespeare in the Park, a portion of the picnic sales will be donated to Theatre Calgary.

Rhythm and Blues Can

Calgary is fortunate in that it has a plethora of musical venues for all to enjoy. One of those is The Blues Can in historic Inglewood. The Blues Can boasts a dark and intimate setting with "great acoustics and a very good line of sight to the stage." Past performers include B.B King bassist Russell Jackson, Ray Montana and Sonny Rhodes. For concertgoers looking to snack, treats like Cajun fried pickles, popcorn prawns and frog legs are available.

The Calgary community of Victoria Park is home to Alberta's first public library, the Memorial Park Library. It was constructed thanks to the efforts of the Calgary Women's Literary Club, formed by 80-year-old Annie Davidson in 1906. If you aren't perusing the titles within Memorial's hallowed halls, you could check out Shelf Life book store, also in Victoria Park, or Pages in Kensington to get your literary fill.

Tour a cemetery

Calgary has a rich and storied history. One of the best ways of learning more about the people who once called the city home is to take a City of Calgary guided cemetery tour. During the summer months, free tours are available at St. Mary's Cemetery, dating back to 1876 and has been deemed a historically significant cultural
landscape by the Calgary Heritage Authority; Union Cemetery, which originally started out on the location of the Shaganappi Golf Course but was moved in 1891, and Burnsland Cemetery dating back to 1923 where many
of Calgary 's First World War veterans were laid to rest. Tours are available every Sunday at 2 p.m. until Oct. 26.
