Committing to colour, in varying degrees

We all crave a little more colour in your lives, especially as summer approaches

Making the leap to adding colour in your home can be a small commitment or a fairly large one depending on your comfort level. I'm going to show you five great ways to add a pop of colour to your interior without painting the walls. Add a colourful lamp:

Terrified of colour commitment? Try adding a single dose of bright colour to your home office with a new lamp. You can find one at any price point and in virtually any colour. I ordered this gorgeous orange desk lamp from Avenue Road. A bit heftier in price than something from your local home store, but the colour commitment level is pretty low since it will fit right in with any neutral space.

Reupholster a side chair in delicious colour:

Do you have an old family-favourite upholstered chair that is looking weathered? This is the perfect time to consider reupholstering it. Do it yourself or hire it out — it's still less expensive than buying a brand new chair. My client decided on this bright chartreuse wool for a family heirloom chair. As it is a fairly small chair, it's a great choice for a pop of colour and would look great in any room of the house or even the front entry.

Paint a door:

If you have a neutral home and want to add a bit of excitement, consider painting a door or two (or three) in a bright colour. Your front door is a great place to start, or you could paint all of the doors on the second floor like my client did here. Kid-friendly colours and bright white walls make this bedroom wing a happy place.

Change up your kitchen backsplash:

No matter what your cabinetry, your kitchen can take on an entire new look with a bright new backsplash. The commitment level is a bit higher but won't break the bank if you decide to change it up again in the future. I love this bright circular backsplash tile in greens and teals by Lynn Donaldson & Associates. The glass tile is whimsical and easy to clean. (photo: Lori Andrews. Take the plunge:

Redo your entire kitchen in vivid colour. The stainless steel and white subway tiles in this kitchen help elevate the family kitchen to restaurant grade. A bright red kitchen is just the right thing for the family that isn't afraid of colour. The glossy cabinetry by Lynn Donaldson & Associates makes this one of my favourite kitchens ever. (photo:
