Multi-family recycling in the works for Cochrane

Residents in Cochrane who live in condos, apartments and townhouses will soon have access to home recycling.

In a release, the Town is changing its Waste Management Bylaw to include multi-family complexes.

"The revisions to the bylaw help multi-family complexes include recycling in their waste service," said Sharon Howland, manager of waste and recycling. "It's about making it easier for people in Cochrane to recycle, and to move us closer to the goals in the Zero Waste Framework. Introduced in 2012, the town's Zero Waste Framework "would set clear direction for reducing waste to the highest degree possible, consistent with the global movement towards Zero Waste, while encouraging a philosophical shift towards considering the elimination of waste in all design and planning decisions throughout the organization," said the Framework report (found here).

If the Waste Management Bylaw is approved, multi-family units in the town will have a recycling program by April 2015. The draft bylaw does not specify how material is to be collected or who will collect it as each building will be able to seek out a service provider that can meet the unique recycling needs of that complex.
