5 things about downtown development
What's on the horizon for Calgary's skyline?Despite much of the news coming out of Calgary's downtown being of the negative variety as of late, there are still developments moving forward. With construction cranes still littering the downtown skyline, CREB®Now takes a look at five developments coming to downtown Calgary in the near future.
The Hat
A 28-storey residential rental complex being built by Calgary-based Cidex Developments Ltd, The Hat will bring the first new rental accommodations to East Village. The family-friendly three-bedroom apartments will offer everything that a family needs, including on-site child care, all within easy walking distance.
Park Point
Located across from Central Memorial Park, ground was recently broken on the 34-storey Park Point tower, which will add 289 units to Calgary's Beltline and stand as the tallest building in the area. Qualex-Landmark's sixth Calgary condo project features one- two- and three-bedroom condos, street-level live-work townhomes and penthouses.
Central Library
Also located in Calgary's burgeoning East Village, Calgary's new $245-million Central Library will provide Calgarians will 240,000 square feet of space – 66 per cent more than the existing downtown branch. Set to open in 2018, the library will house a collection of 600,000 books in what Ward 7 Coun. Druh Farrell has called "one of the most, if not the most important public structures in the city."
Calgary City Centre
Scheduled for completion later this year, phase one of Cadillac Fairview's 36-storey Calgary City Centre project will bring 850,000 square feet of Class AA office space to the corner of Second Street and Third Avenue S.W. This tower is part of a larger mixed-use development which incorporates office, retail, a five-star hotel and luxury condominium residences.
Brookfield Place
Set to be the tallest building in Canada at 247 metres, the mammoth Brookfield Place will add 1.4 million square feet of office space to the downtown core when it opens in 2018. A second one million square foot tower is also planned for the lot, which is located between First and Second Streets and Sixth and Seventh Avenues S.W., bringing the total square footage to an astounding 2.4 million square feet.
