Community Profile: Citadel is a bastion of diversity and community spirit in Calgary's northwest
Roughly 25 years ago, the northwest community of Citadel began taking shape. At the time, it was literally pushing the northern edge of the city, etching its boundaries along Country Hills Blvd and Sarcee Trail, while its northern edge spilled into the wild sagebrush of ranchers' fields. Today, it is bounded by Stoney Trail to the north and west.Over the years, the community has matured, attracting a diverse mix of residents. It's also a family friendly community, with an active community association that hosts plenty of events that invite connectivity, including Easter egg hunts, movie nights in the park and the Winter Gala.
"Citadel has been, and remains, one of the most secure and safe communities in Calgary." - David Cox, Citadel Community Association president
David Cox, president of the Citadel Community Association, has been living in the area for seven years. He says there is a real sense of community spirit and pride, two qualities that underpin the community's reputation.
"Citadel has been, and remains, one of the most secure and safe communities in Calgary," he said, adding that over 1,500 residents communicate daily via social media to draw attention to any safety and security issues, and to connect socially.
"Citadel is a diverse and multicultural community, and one of the major goals of the community association is to bring all of these diverse cultures together," said Cox. To that end, plans are in the works for a central community hub facility. Progress has been made on the funding and development permits, and the Citadel Community Association is hoping to break ground soon.
