The value of volunteering

As a new REALTOR^® in 2012, Kelly Macdonald was encouraged to volunteer with CREB^® in any capacity she could. This year, she received the 2023 CREB^® Volunteer of the Year - Marilyn Jones Memorial Award.

But how did it all start? Initially, Macdonald participated in a few CREB^® focus groups and task forces, which sparked her curiosity about the volunteer opportunities available.

Before long, she’d joined other CREB^® Standing Committees such as Fundraising and Donor Relations, Professional Standards Assurance and Practice Governance, and the Critical Illness Benefit Society committee.

“It’s rewarding to contribute to something that can make a difference in the industry,” she says.

Macdonald’s commitment to giving back to her community for over 10 years has taught her many lessons that have enriched her professional and personal life.

“I’m learning new things that make me a better REALTOR^® and a better person,” says Macdonald.

“Volunteering with other REALTORS^® is a fantastic way to connect with other CREB^® members and I have built many valuable relationships that way.”

Macdonald says that, to this day, her most rewarding volunteer experience has been contributing to creating safe and affordable houses for families through the Habitat Build Site program.

“Even though construction is out of my comfort zone, this project is always a blast,” she says. “You also get to learn a pile of new things. Working alongside other members and getting to know them better is a lot of fun and builds lasting friendships.”

To manage life as a busy REALTOR^® and as a dedicated volunteer, Macdonald says that the answer lies in effective time management and avoiding overcommitment.

“Knowing that I can’t say yes to everything and understanding my reasons for volunteering helps me stay focused, motivated and to better prioritize my tasks,” she adds.

In the future, Macdonald wants to continue her contributions to the real estate community by mentoring new agents and sharing her knowledge and experience to help them succeed in their careers while upholding high professional standards.

She also wants to strengthen the real estate community by encouraging others to volunteer, to be active in the community, and to engage with other members.

“By getting involved through volunteering, you will gain a better understanding of how the board operates and help contribute to its improvement,” she says. “Not only is giving back one way to make our industry better, but it also gives you a sense of personal fulfillment.”
