The Alberta Real Estate Foundation: Real estate with real impact

Did you know that every real estate transaction in Alberta helps fund initiatives that strengthen our communities and industry?

Founded in 1991 under the Real Estate Act, the Alberta Real Estate Foundation is a non-profit grantmaking organization dedicated to bolstering Alberta’s real estate sector while benefiting all Albertans.

With over $31 million invested in more than 800 initiatives, AREF has funded projects that range from affordable housing and public space enhancements to professional development and sustainable land management practices.

Our unique funding model directs interest earned on trust deposits—managed by brokers and property managers—straight to the Foundation.

This approach, powered by the collective efforts of Alberta's real estate professionals and their clients, reinvests funds into projects that enrich our communities, supports our industry and our land.

We take pride in supporting initiatives that make a positive difference and we hope that REALTORS® do, too.

As AREF Governor and REALTOR® Joanna Barstad explains, “As REALTORS®, it’s essential to remember that we all contribute to the Alberta Real Estate Foundation. The Foundation supports initiatives that strengthen our communities, enhance the real estate industry, and promote sustainable practices."

“By sharing these successes and raising awareness about the Foundation’s work, we can help amplify the positive impact that REALTORS® and consumers have on their communities with each real estate transaction.”

Every deal you facilitate helps fund tools, research, and resources that directly support your industry and your clients.

The projects we fund produce resources that equip REALTORS® and their clients with practical tools, expert knowledge, and essential resources to navigate the ever-evolving real estate landscape. For example:

  • Legal information for homeowners – Resources from the Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta provide accessible legal guidance on homeownership, condo ownership, and residential tenancies.
  • Indoor air quality and safety – Radon gas information, testing, and mitigation resources from Evict Radon help improve home safety.
  • Energy efficiency education Empower Me offers multilingual workshops to help homeowners reduce energy costs and improve efficiency.

Visit our website to find the full list of projects and resources. Join AREF in transforming Alberta’s real estate landscape. For more information or to share your ideas, contact hello@aref.ab.ca or follow @arefabca on social media.

Our door is always open, and we look forward to connecting with you.
