Housing a Priority

Calgary's housing vacancy rate is a priority Mayor Naheed Nenshi told reporters at the July 25 release of the Civic Census.

"We really need to prioritize (the vacancy rate)," Nenshi said. "We have needed for some time to prioritize housing that matches the needs of the market and we need to continue to do that."

David Watson, director of Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation (AHCC) – the non-profit organization that works to deliver entry-level homes for Calgarians – said over the last year, interest has increased substantially.

Local Initiatives Awarded

Two Calgary initiatives were recognized at the July 29 council meeting after earning recognition both nationally and internationally.

Firstly Mayor Naheed Nenshi recognized the Bow to Bluff Initiative, which earned a reward for New and Emerging Planning from the Canadian Institute of Planners. Bow to Bluff is a citizen-led initiative to create great public places in the city starting with the public corridor along the Sunnyside LRT line between the Bow River and McHugh Bluff.

Open For Business

After a halt in construction due to bridge deck "deficiencies", the 96 Avenue NE extension to the west of the Calgary International Airport opened Aug. 7.

The extension is a key, east/west transportation corridor in the city providing access from north central Calgary to Deerfoot Trail through to Airport Trail. Commuters and transit users will be happy to hear of the opening as the extension allows the transit route 300 to use 96 Avenue NE to access the airport and connect with downtown.

Media Tour Showcases Infrastructure Damaged by June Floods

On Aug. 8, about 15 journalists gathered in a bus to tour some areas of the city hit hardest by the June floods.

After stops at the Heritage Drive and Glenmore Trail underpass — expected to open Aug. 15 — and the Riverdale Sifton pedestrian bridge along Sifton Blvd., the tour made a stop at the Erlton LRT station.

Council Proposes ARP for Stadium Shopping Centre

Citizens of the Calgary community of University Heights packed temporary council and two adjoining rooms on July 23 to listen in on a proposed area redevelopment plan (ARP) for Stadium Shopping Centre on 16th Avenue and Uxbridge Drive NW.

In council, Mayor Naheed Nenshi explained to the full house that all public submissions on the site were talking about density and land use, factors which were not on the table for the July 23 meeting.
