Victoria Park Revisited

Once the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed, the Calgary community of Victoria Park will have a new green space for its residents.

"It's a for sure thing, we have funding in place," said Michelle Reid with City of Calgary Parks. "We are in the process of trying to get our development permit and we plan to start construction next summer."

Theft Proof Your Garage

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is reminding residents to be mindful of home and vehicle security following a number of offences in the city's northwest. Since the beginning of October, offender(s) have committed approximately 25 offences targeting vehicles, garages and homes in the area. In the garage break and enters, offenders gained access through unlocked doors or they have stolen garage door openers from vehicles to gain access. In some cases, they have then gained entry to the home via the connecting door within the garage. Calgarians can help ensure their homes and garages are safe by taking the following steps:

Urbanization in Cities to Boost Business Opportunities

While a slowdown in national residential construction will play a role in moderating growth for Canadian businesses in 2013, a pickup in office/retail construction, combined with increased population density in major cities provide excellent opportunities for entrepreneurs, according to a special report from Sherry Cooper, chief economist for BMO Financial Group.

"The boom in non-residential construction represents a clear example of where opportunities lie for Canadian business," said Cooper.

An Early Calgary Christmas

The holiday season has come a little early at one of Calgary's most historic sites with Lougheed House's Christmas All Through the House Nov. 17-25.

Canadian Mayors Band Together in Pursuit of Better Funding

The mayors of Canada's biggest cities are pledging to match new federal and provincial government funding dollar for dollar in an attempt to procure more funding from the federal government.

Modernizing Canada's "crowded and rapidly-aging transportation networks" was cited as a major reason behind the need for increased funding.

According to the the 22-member big city mayors' caucus, one out of every four roads is congested, with 50 per cent in need immediate repair.

CMHC Forecast More Prosperity for Calgary Market

Buoyed by net migration, job prosperity and low mortgage rates, MLS® sales in Calgary this year are expected to reach their highest level since 2007, before increasing even further in 2013.

As outlined in the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) annual Calgary Housing Outlook Conference, which took place Nov. 20 at the BMO Centre, Richard Cho, CMHC's senior market analyst for Calgary, said sales in Calgary should increase by almost 16 per cent in 2012 to 26,000 units, rising by another 500 units in 2013 to 26,500.

Baby Boomers Selling

The BMO Retirement Institute has released a report stating one-third of baby boomers are planning to sell their home to help fund their retirement.

The report, which examines the relationship between Canadians readiness for retirement and their attitudes regarding home ownership, found 32 per cent of respondents believe living comfortably in retirement is the most financial accomplishment to achieve over a lifetime but 40 per cent are not confident they can save enough to fund their ideal retirement lifestyle.
