Still Going Strong

Despite mounting evidence to suggest a slowing market, vacancy in Calgary's downtown office sector continues to fall. Marking the eleventh consecutive quarter of positive absorption and overall decreases in vacancy rates, a new report from Collier's International shows that nearly 260,000 sq. ft. of office space was leased in second quarter of 2012.

From Stephen Avenue to Heritage Park

When touring the sights at Heritage Park, the building dedicated to the life of early Calgary resident W.G. MacKay might look like any other log cabin. However, the small building has gone through several incarnations, including serving for a time as a Calgary bakery.

"Our records state the cabin was built in approximately 1884 or '85 out of logs salvaged from an abandoned mine," said Barb Munro, communications specialist for Heritage Park.

How To Build a Birdhouse

Depending on your style, Calgary's backyards can vary from a simplistic square of lawn to a green thumb's paradise of terraces, stones, ponds and lush beds of flowers and shrubs. Further adding character to your yard — as well as attracting the singsong crowd of Calgary's many feathered friends including House Sparrows, Black-Capped Chickadees, Red- Breasted Nuthatch and Robins — a birdhouse is a fairly quick and inexpensive do-it-yourself project.

Momentum Builds

Housing starts in the Calgary Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) increased 65 per cent for the month of June 2012 compared to June 2011.

"The gain in new construction was attributed to higher starts for both single-detached and multi-family units," said a Housing Now report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
