Ramsay seniors take next steps following demolition of historic hub
Four years after a hailstorm heavily damaged the building, the Ramsay Welcome Centre is coming down as residents begin to discuss what might replace it as part of their community hub.
The local seniors' centre has been located on Eighth Street S.E. since the 1970s. Before that, the building was actually located in West Hillhurst before being moved across the city, explains Denver Brust, vice-president internal with the Ramsay Community Association, adding the current community hall was built next door in the 1980s.

Developers creating public art 'for the people that belongs to the people'
It's Sunday morning and soft skiffs of white snow blanket the still green grass, while golden and red leaves cling tightly to drooping branches laden with the heaviness of an early fall storm.
As the sun streams through a parting overcast sky, melting the show of winter that has arrived all too soon, the landscape becomes an artistic vista – one of twinkling light and impressionistic colour as St. Patrick's Island awakens to the day.

A return to balanced
Indicators suggests Calgary's housing market might be evening out
New housing market statistics are reinforcing the emergence of so-called balanced conditions in Calgary.
In its monthly stats package for June, CREB® noted key segments of the local market are seeing increased price stabilization brought upon by more moderate sales declines and listing increases.
CREB® chief economist Ann-Marie Lurie singled out last month's detached sector, which saw new listings decline at a faster rate than sales (five and 3.7 per cent, respectively) for only the second time in the past 12 months – the last time coming in January. As a result, the sector's benchmark price totaled $502,400, which was 0.4 per cent higher than May, yet still 3.4 per cent lower than last year's levels.

Veil lifted
Livingston to eventually house 30,000 people
Calgary's newest community came online this week as Brookfield Residential lifted the veil on its new Livingston development in the city's north that, when completed, will house as many as 30,000 people.
Covering more than 500 hectares straddling Centre Street north of Stoney Trail, Livingston is the first master-planned community in north Calgary within the past 20 years. It will include an estimated 10,000 homes, and will be anchored by a major activity centre that will include an estimated one million square feet of retail and institutional space,
Ward 3 Coun. Jim Stevenson, who attended the official construction launch June 28, calls Livingston "a new city north of the ring road."

Urban planning experts offer tips on how to shop for your next neighbourhood
Is it a neighbourhood with a lake so you don't need a vacation cottage?
Or an upgraded, older neighbourhood with lots of housing choices?
Perhaps a community with a main street so "you don't have to jump in your car to get a quart of milk?"
When urban commentators weigh in on what homebuyers, first-time or otherwise, should be looking for when they chose a place to live the emphasis is on community amenities – or as Greg Morrow puts it, looking "outside the four walls" of the home, to the DNA of the neighbourhood.

Housing professionals say upscale communities such as Heritage Pointe showing staying power
The lure of the luxury lifestyle is still drawing homebuyers to exclusive communities in and around Calgary despite some challenges in the local economy, say industry professionals.
Albi Homes community manager Amy Koehn notes Artesia in Heritage Point south of the city, for example, "is one of our busiest communities. It's very consistent and there's a lot of traction with the product here."
Koehn cites the community's lower density and larger lot sizes as motivators to buy in upscale communities such as Heritage Pointe.

Okotoks launches parks and recreation plan initiative
To guide Town for next 20 years
Okotoks has launched a new parks and recreation initiative that it hopes will guide planning efforts for the growing community south of Calgary.
The master plan is designed to provide an overall framework to guide the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of parks and recreation programs, services, and facilities for the next 10 to 20 years.
"Parks and recreation are important services that help us enjoy a great quality of life in Okotoks. The Recreation, Parks and Leisure Master Plan is a key initiative to help us effectively plan for the future of these services," said Mayor Bill Robertson.

City opens downtown off-leash park
New site opens at Cannaught Park
The City of Calgary has opened its first fenced inner-city off-leash area at Connaught Park.
"There are almost 650 dogs licensed in the Beltline, and during public engagement we identified a need for a safe and dedicated off-leash space in the area," says Doug Marter, development manager for Calgary Parks.
Connaught Park, located at 11th Street and 14 Avenue S.W., was selected for its central location and because it was originally designed as a multi-use park, said the City.

Lake communities making a splash with homeowners
When Alex Capicio and his wife Arlen started house hunting for their family of five, it was all about location.
Arlen worked at the South Health Campus, but the family also wanted to be close to neighbourhood niceties such as a lake.
The couple settled on Mahogany in the city's southeast in January 2014 and haven't looked back since.
