The Calgary Homeless Foundation and the RESOLVE Campaign are joining forces in the development of an assisted-living apartment in the Beltline for 30 formerly homeless individuals.

"The Government of Alberta is proud to support Stepping Stone Manor, and future apartment buildings that help low-income Albertans obtain affordable housing," said Greg Weadick, acting minister, Municipal Affairs.

A City of Calgary Parks program provides opportunities for residents to learn the importance of picking up after their pooch.

On April 26, the City will launch it's PUPPY (Pick Up Pooch's Poo Yourself) program at River Park. The program gives Calgarians a chance to learn about the importance of picking up and disposing of pet waste to ensure parks stay healthy and clean for everyone.

Now that the snow melted for the most part, Calgarians are taking to their yards for raking and gardening, a perfect time for thoughts to turn to composting.

This spring, the City is encouraging residents to drop off yard waste at City landfills,
free of charge, so it can be composted instead of thrown away as waste. Until June 1, all three City landfills will waive fees for residential loads of leaves, branches and
other yard waste.

Before moving downtown about a month ago, Eric Westrum made the downtown commute on his bicycle — utilizing John Laurie Boulevard and the 10th Street bike lane from his home in Brentwood — year round.

Currie Barracks development to add 11,000 residents under higher density model

A proud history is set to become an ambitious future for one of Calgary's most historic communities.

Currie Barracks, the former Canadian Forces Base (CFB) in southwest Calgary, is about to undergo a transformation that will eventually see the area home to as many as 11,000 new residents.

With a proposed network of downtown cycle tracks unveiled, Calgary City Council will vote On April 28 to determine whether or not the $11.5 million pilot project will get the go ahead.

City Transportation said the 12-month pilot allows time to study how the new network affects people traveling in areas pegged for cycle tracks, will connect existing pathways so more people can utilize them and will provide the same function and safety as a permanent cycle track would.

The Canadian Home Builders' Association (CHBA) recognized CHBA – Calgary Region with a community service award for their efforts during the 2013 flood.

The award is meant to recognize outstanding contributions made by local and provincial home builders' associations to the betterment of the way of life for the people in their community.

Now that the sun has returned and the snow is starting to melt, thoughts may be turning to summer flooding.

The City recently held a press conference in order to outline flood mitigation measures being taken for Calgary from here on out since the 1-in-100 year flood that devastated the area last summer.

With spring finally appearing on the horizon, Calgary's construction season will soon be kicking into high gear. Along with all the new homes breaking ground, contractors around Calgary will also be busy helping to undo the damage done by the June floods that struck the city.

With more than 2,600 buildings impacted as a result of the floods, the City has launched a safety campaign aimed at ensuring all the work is completed in proper fashion.

"We want to ensure property repairs and construction work is done safely and meets all safety codes and standards, resulting in a safe building," notes Kevin Griffiths, chief building official, Development & Building Approvals. "Creating a safe property for our families, tenants or customers requires construction work to meet the standards and requirements of all applicable codes and City bylaws."
