Having never lost its small town roots, the community of Bowness continues to be a destination for Calgary homeowners.

Going back in time to before the First World War, Bowness was a "suburb perfect" vision of Englishmen John Hextall. Hextall was the visionary behind Bowness Park, originally a weekend retreat for nearby Calgarians, and today a mainstay for those craving nature, relaxation and activity, especially in the winter for skating on the lagoon.

A look back at Calgary's June floods and forward into the future

June 20 started out like any other day in Calgary. With showers in the forecast, parents saw their children off to school with umbrellas in hand and rain boots on their feet, then began their own daily commute along Calgary's soon-to be rain-soaked streets.

Little did they know that by the end of weekend, much of their city would be left underwater during what's since been dubbed the "100-Year Flood."

Before moving downtown about a month ago, Eric Westrum made the downtown commute on his bicycle — utilizing John Laurie Boulevard and the 10th Street bike lane from his home in Brentwood — year round.

A little bit country

Communities of Bearspaw and Springbank perfect for country living

Nestled on the outskirts of Calgary's city limits in Rocky View County are the communities of Springbank and Bearspaw.

These two communities offer a quiet setting with the big city nearby. The name for Springbank originated from a creek that runs through the community, known as Springbank Creek. The community started off as agricultural based and in the
1950s started to attract rural residential living.

Wrecked and Wonderful

Wreck City is currently open to the public until April 27th

Slated for demolition, nine houses, three garages and one greenhouse in the Calgary community of Sunnyside are going to go out with an artistic bang.

Wreck City: An Epilogue for 809 is being touted as the largest project of its kind in Calgary. Eight artistcurators and more than 100 artists, musicians and performers are participating in transforming the homes into intriguing works of art through various mediums and sharing them with the public April 19-27.

Wrecking Sunnyside

No one is really wrecking Sunnyside; though Wreck City, a community of artists, is giving nine houses in the area a new look.

The nine houses in the Calgary community of are set for demolition but, thanks to a partnership with Bucci Developments Ltd., the buildings are playing their swan songs in a pretty spectacular way.

Lending a Hand

One of Canada's most recognized figures was in Calgary March 15, participating in Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta build in the community of Evanston.

Governor General David Johnston was on hand at the build donating his time to help with the construction of a home for a Calgary family. The Governor General serves as a federal representative of Queen Elizabeth II.

Pop The Question: Marc Boutin

Calgary based architect Marc Boutin is a busy guy. As well as working as an associate professor in the University of Calgary's Architecture Faculty, he's the namesake of The Marc Boutin Architectural Collaborative Inc. Born in Ottawa, one of Boutin's latest projects is the First Street underpass upgrade — a plan looking to rejuvenate and illuminate one of the city's least attractive spaces. The makeover has already captured national attention winning a 2012 Award of Excellence from Canadian Architect magazine. Boutin took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with CREB®Now about what drew him to architecture as well as his favourite building in the city.

McKenzie Towne

In the dozen or so years since becoming a Calgary neighbourhood, McKenzie Towne has established itself as a bustling community with a family friendly atmosphere.

"I love the neighbourhood we live in, we live in a cul-de-sac and there's a lot of kids the same age as my children," said Angelina Wong, who along with her family of four has called McKenzie Towne home for the last nine years.
