It doesn't take much asking around to find people with horror stories about renovations gone wrong, and many of those stories stem from negative experiences with contractors. Finding the right contractor(s) for your specific needs and budget is a crucial part of making your renovation dream into a reality, so it pays to do your homework.
The following is a list of questions from the Canadian Home Builders' Association (CHBA) to ask any contractor before you hire them:

Over the years, designer, builder and renovator, Shane Rennie of Rectangle Design Inc. has seen a consistent trend emerge when it comes to renovations.
"Most people are looking for a long-term investment, a family home, a place that they can see themselves in 15 or 20 years and they are looking to renovate to suit, so that the home lasts a lifetime," said Rennie.
But renovating an entire home at once is often out of most people's price range.
"The trend now is to renovate in phases," said Rennie, who recently purchased a home that he is renovating in three stages. "The home is in a fantastic neighbourhood, but it was at the top of our budget."

From Lethbridge to Lakeview
Jodi Monaghan finds joy in personalizing her new home
Three years ago, Jodi Monaghan was on the precipice of change. She'd been living in Lethbridge for close to 30 years, her children were grown and she'd recently sold her dental practice. Monaghan wanted a fresh start in a bigger city with the right market conditions for opening a new clinic.
A new relationship had her traveling back and forth between Calgary and Lethbridge, and the more time she spent in Calgary, the more she realized that she loved the city. So she began searching for an older home in an established neighbourhood. She wanted a home she could renovate and make her own. In October, 2014 she found and purchased a 50-year-old, four-level split bungalow in the community of Lakeview.

What's hot for homes in 2017
One could describe Calgary-based interior designer Amanda Hamilton as trend averse.
"Focusing on trends is a sure way to date your home," she said, pointing to dwellings from the 1980s that show their vintage via their yellow-oak interiors and brass details. "We don't follow trends. Trends are interesting for people who are into fast design."
Hamilton added current economic conditions can also further influence trends' relevance.

The Calgary Home + Design Show is back for its 34th year.
Seems like a match made in heaven.
Brought about by ongoing economic uncertainty, more Albertans are looking for ways to upgrade their space rather than their place. According to Statistics Canada, investment on residential renovation in the province has increased by 3.8 per cent over the first six months of 2015 to $3.1 billion.

New legislation could help seniors stay in their homes
The Alberta government is proposing legislation that could assist seniors looking to age in place.
The proposed Seniors' Home Adaptation and Repair Act would enable a new low-interest home equity loan program to help seniors improve the safety and sustainability of their homes.
Bill 5, the Seniors' Home Adaptation and Repair program, would allow senior homeowners who qualify to finance essential home repairs and adaptations, including widening doorways or hallways, installing walk-in tubs, roof replacements and electrical repairs.

With patio season in sight, here are five tips from the City of Calgary's Planning and Development department before tackling your spring reno project:
Backyard decks
Before you start, the City suggests determining whether you're building a pergola or roof structure that is attached to your house. If it's an extension to the house, it's considered an addition, in which case you will need to apply for a building permit. For uncovered decks that are not located on the same facade as a basement walkout entry, the maximum height is 1.5 metres in a developed area. In both the developed and developing areas, the height of a deck cannot exceed 0.3 metres above the main floor level of a house.

Best of housing industry recognized
Nearly 100 companies and professionals in the Calgary and area's residential construction industry were recognized Thursday as the newly amalgamated CHBA – UDI Calgary Region Association announced finalists for the 2015 Sales and Marketing (SAM) Awards.
The 29th annual awards, which celebrates and acknowledges innovation and excellence in the industry, will hand out 60 piece of hardware, including the top Grand SAMs – three builder categories (Builder of the Year, Builder of Merit for a small-volume builder and Multi-Family Builder of the Year).

What separates a home that sits on the market for months from one that's sold in a week? Industry experts say it comes down to properly executing proven strategies and techniques.
Calgary-based real estate agent Christina Hagerty with Re/Max Realty Professionals, who has been working the industry for more than two decades, said homes that sell quickly in this market tend to have sellers who are willing to do what needs to be done quickly – even if that means cancelling poker night for a last-minute showing.
She added motivated sellers also know the market before they list – meaning they won't waste money on things such as unnecessary pre-sale renovations.
