Stretching the Garden Season

The grocery store is selling kale.

Of course it is, but I wasn't expecting to see it for sale outdoors in pots as well as indoors in the vegetable cooler.

Orange is the New Black...In the Garden

Okay I am hooked.

The newest television show on Netflix has me vegging on the couch instead of in the garden. But even though I am watching the entire season of Orange is the New Black while also indulging in Amazing Race Canada, I have taken time to critique my garden annuals.

The Yellow Patch Problem

When I got my first — and only — dog Kepla, a friend insisted, "training a dog to pee on demand is perfect when you are in a hurry during the morning walk."

As I have since learned, a number of dogs and their owners do not know this basic skill and dogs continue to pee on lawns instead of back alleys or gravel pads. In lieu of dog training, new products are still being released to "solve the problem".

Under layers of sunscreen, a hat and long sleeve sun protective clothing I am on holidays, kayaking in 30-plus heat. Luckily there are a few things gardeners can do to help plant pots thrive through weather extremes this summer.

Dabbling in the Garden

When I saw the tomatoes flopping over in the greenhouse, I went to grab a roll of string to hold them back. On my way to find the string, I saw the wilting mint and decided I should plant it in the ground, so I went to get my favourite transplant spade. My husband admitted to leaving the spade out front in the new pumpkin patch. When I got the spade, I spotted a nest of emerging baby spiders on a hosta leaf so went indoors to get my camera. In case you're at a loss — there is definitely a lot of dabbling in garden this week.

The Kindest Cut

No one does any pruning in the wild. Not unless you consider the effects of high winds and branches ripped off by moose-in-rut pruning. But the city is a different kind of place. We have small spaces and big dreams. We want tidy even if our stated goal is low maintenance.

So the conversation eventually comes around to pruning. "This sounds like marriage therapy" called out a heckler at a talk I was giving earlier this month.

Tips for planting your favourite herbs with easy access

I realize I am a lazy cook. If a recipe calls for herbs I don't have I will change the recipe rather than run to the store. To simplify summer meals I plant my most loved herbs in pots and leave them on my back step for easy access. This works for gardeners with either estates or the tiniest stoop or balcony.
