Tips for planting your favourite herbs with easy access

I realize I am a lazy cook. If a recipe calls for herbs I don't have I will change the recipe rather than run to the store. To simplify summer meals I plant my most loved herbs in pots and leave them on my back step for easy access. This works for gardeners with either estates or the tiniest stoop or balcony.

Test Your Knowledge: Water Conservation

Water is something we don't take much time to think about each day; we use it for drinking, cooking, washing, cleaning, playing and more but not much thought is given to how it arrived to our taps or how much we're using when we water our lawns or run through our sprinklers. Water is a valuable resource in any community and Calgary is no different, how much do you know about water conservation?

Composting For Free

Calgarians are encouraged to drop off leaf and yard waste accumulated from last fall and winter at City landfills for free so it can be composted instead of thrown away.

Until June 2, all three City landfills (Spyhill, East Calgary and Shepard) will waive fees for residential loads of leaves, branches, plants and other yard and garden material. The material will be composted at the sites, turning it back into a useful resource.

REAPing The Benefits

For the last seven years, Respect For The Earth And All People (REAP) and its members have been providing sustainable products for Calgarians while helping foster an understanding of the impact of shopping locally.

Feeling she wasn't using her skills for anything as meaningful as she would like, REAP President and CEO Stephanie Jackman left her job in 2004 in pursuit of using her skills for something more.

Around since 1978, Green Calgary was "empowering Calgarians to create healthy homes and communities" long before most in the city had any notion about bringing eco-friendliness into their homes. Boldly Knock Down Walls

In Blazer's Garden a walled-off parking area was surrounded by a massive nine-foot (three metre) wide hedge. Once two sides of the hedge were removed, the greenhouse was installed and patio bricks were laid. Most of the plants in pots and planters on this patio are edible, so the vegetable garden and sitting area are combined into on larger, single use area for fun and food. The fence keeps the deer out!

Have you ever knocked out a wall inside your home? Did that give you a wonderful feeling of space and openness? Now imagine knocking down a few walls in your garden.
