Historical Home Spotlight: Walter Hargrave Residence

Year of Construction: 1913

Address: 1732 13th Ave. N.W.

Community: Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill

Architectural Style: Arts and Crafts

The 1½-storey, Arts and Crafts-style Walter Hargrave Residence is unique for a couple of reason. Constructed in 1913, it is one of the oldest buildings in the northwest community of Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill, a neighbourhood whose founding dates back to before the First World War.

The giant numbers on the hill at Battalion Park are composed of 16,000 stones hauled and arranged by soldiers in 1991 to commemorate the four battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force that trained at that location before leaving to fight in the First World War.

Signal Hill and other "Westhills" communities provide residents with beauty and functionality in equal measure

Carla Nelson and her husband moved to Signal Hill seven years ago, attracted by the home styles and location. "We were looking for a bigger home to raise our family in – a home with a developed basement and a yard that was already established and larger than what was available in the newer areas," said Nelson.

The couple purchased a two-level split that amply accommodates their two boys, ages five and seven, and rambunctious puppy.

Garrison Woods, Garrison Green and Currie embody Calgary's rich military history

With every passing year, the events of the First and Second World Wars become ever more distant parts of our country's history. Remembrance requires work, and any excuse to think about or discuss these conflicts and the sacrifices of Canadian veterans helps keep their memories alive.

In this context, three southwest Calgary neighbourhoods that wear their military history on their sleeve are especially significant.
