Two sides of the story

December sales activity rises again, but so does supply

Sales activity for all product types improved in December and pushed monthly sales to long-term averages for the second month in a row.

However, new listings also rose, keeping inventory elevated compared to typical levels for December. With more supply remaining compared to sales, benchmark prices edged down for the fifth consecutive month.

Transition talk

Calgary housing market to see increased stability, signs of change in 2017: CREB®

The worst might be over for Calgary's housing market, according to CREB®, which is forecasting transitional conditions throughout this year on the back of renewed optimism in the oil patch.

The forecast, captured in the real estate organization's 2017 Economic Outlook and Regional Housing Market Forecast report, comes after more than two years of recessionary conditions that have been manifested by sales and price declines in virtually every corner of the local market.

'People need to plan to weather storms:' Minhas

CREB®Now sits down with 2017 CREB® Forecast and Tradeshow keynote speaker Manjit Minhas

Manjit Minhas is a name brand – literally. She's CEO and co-founder of Minhas Breweries & Distillery, makers of Boxer Lager, Lazy Mutt Ale and Huber Bock. And for the past two years, she's gained national fame as a Dragon on CBC's Dragon's Den. In January, Minhas will be the keynote speaker at the 2017 CREB® Forecast and Tradeshow.

CREB®Now recently had the opportunity to sit down with her to get a sneak peek at what she plans to talk about.

55 Years of Real Estate: 2005 CREB® president Marilyn Jones

Former CREB® president Marilyn Jones revelled in changing Calgary market

For much of her career, former CREB® president Marilyn Jones focused on helping clients from across Canada relocate to Calgary and find a house.

She liked the pressure – often times people had just a few days to look at houses in a new city, make a major decision and submit an offer – and was comfortable managing the many demands that needed to be juggled.

Those same skills came in handy when Jones became CREB® president in 2005.
