Northwest appeal: with a diverse mix of old and new neighbourhoods, Calgary's northwest residents say they share a common identity

Ascend to the summit of Nose Hill Park on a clear, sunny day and you'll have a spectacular vantage from which to survey the city. It's just one of the many parks in the city's northwest that Calgarians know and love.

As a quadrant, northwest Calgary is an area roughly bordered by Deerfoot Trail to the east, the Bow River to the south, Calgary's city limits to the west, and Stoney Trail to the north.

The northwest is diverse, in both demographics and geography. Several new communities now exist farther north and west of Stoney Trail and one of city's oldest neighbourhoods, Bowness, dates back to the turn of the 20th century.

Proposed NW bike lane sparks debate

Community cites lack of consultation

A bike lane proposed for northwest Calgary is meeting with some controversy from area residents who say the new lane could lead to increased traffic and parking woes.

While the new lane is intended to connect the city's growing cycle network from existing tracks along Northland Drive and Cambrian Drive/10th Street N.W., residents expressed concerns at a recent open house.

Toni Pilkey, president of the Triwood Community Association, said to those in attendance that the project has not undergone enough consultation with area residents and that the City is being "underhanded" in moving the project forward.

In October 2011, The City installed the bike lanes on 10th Street N.W., between Fifth Avenue N.W. and Cambrian Drive/Northmount Drive N.W., as part of a pilot project. The City monitored and evaluated the new roadway design for the next four seasons, and based on increased ridership, determined the bike lanes should be permanent.

City gives green light to new sewer line

Residential development to continue in northwest

Developers in several northwest communities will finally be able to move forward with construction with news the City of Calgary has begun installing a new sewage pipeline through Bowness.

The two-kilometre Bowness Sanitary Trunk will largely be dug with the help of a German machine which will work "around the clock" to drill a one-metre wide tunnel from 13th Avenue N.W. to Bow Crescent N.W.

Addition of the new line, which is expected to be completed in fall 2016, will allow development that had been on hold due to sewer capacity concerns to move forward in the communities of Bowness, Canada Olympic Park, Crestmont, Greenwood/Greenbriar, Rockyridge, Scenic Acres, Silver Springs, Tuscany, Valley Ridge and Varsity.
