A dollar may not go as far as it used to, but $300,000 can still take Calgary homebuyers a long way.

"At that price, you could look at a one- or two-bedroom apartment with underground or outside parking, and an elevator if you want a high-rise," said Monique Windrem, a REALTOR® and leasing agent with Hope Street Real Estate Corp. "You might get extra storage, and if you opted for a one-bedroom, you may also have a gym, concierge and security if you're not set on living downtown."

Calgarians drawn to more affordable alternative

After living in southwest communities of Midnapore and Evergreen for 27 years, transitioning to an apartment in Mission was an easy decision for Michelle Norman.

"Condo living was a very easy adjustment," she said. "I like the idea of being surrounded by a good mix of young and older residents as well as not having to worry about such things as yard work and snow removal."

Mustard Seed, RESOLVE campaign join forces for The 1010 Centre

A new 12-storey development has officially opened in Calgary to provide affordable homes for low-income residents.

The 1010 Centre, owned by The Mustard Seed, includes 224 furnished units, as well as support services including employment coaching, a computer lab and assigned support workers for residents.
The centre is located downtown on Centre Street S.E.

"For 30 years, the Mustard Seed has been caring for Calgarians experiencing poverty and homelessness. With the completion of The 1010 Centre, we are now able to provide 224 safe, new, affordable home to low-income and formerly homeless residents," said Mustard Seed CEO Stephen Wile.

Getting 'buy' with help

First-time homebuyers turning to mom, dad for financial assistance

More young Canadians are turning to their parents to help find financing when purchasing their first home.

According to BMO's 2015 Home Buying Report, 42 per cent of first-time buyers are expecting their parents or relatives to help pay for their first home. Up 12 per cent from
last year, the number shows Canadians needing a helping hand to enter the market is on the rise.

Working with Lexington Development Management and Nyhoff Architecture, the building, on the corner of Shaganappi Trail and Varsity Drive will provide a combination of attainable homes and market-priced units.

Attainable Homes Calgary Corp. (AHCC) is a non-profit, social enterprise - wholly owned by the City of Calgary - delivering entry-level homes for Calgarians caught in the city's affordability gap.
