New Habitat Homes for 2 Airdrie Families

Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta held a celebration Aug. 21 for two families who received new homes in Airdrie.

Ground was broken on the semidetached homes in October 2011 in the community of Bayside. Through Built Green Canada, the project is certified platinum and will reduce the overall water and utility costs for the homes. "Habitat has given me and my family the chance to dream again," said new homeowner Daniela. "We have been blessed; not only with this incredible partnership but with the opportunity to meet and work alongside some amazing volunteers and sponsors, people who give so generously to this project."

"We are proud to be a part of the town of Airdrie to bring much need affordable housing to the community," said Leslie Tamagi, president and CEO, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta. "These home are another wonderful example of community spirit of caring and sharing in action, the result of individuals, corporations and government working in partnership to help local families realize the dream of homeownership — this is a day of joy and celebration for these two families."

Habitat Southern Alberta builds and rehabilitates simple, decent homes with the help of homeowner families. Each family must contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" toward the building to their home. Homes are then sold to partner families with no down payment required and are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages.

Have you volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, what was your experience like? Have you been a beneficiary of Habitat for Humanity, what has it meant to you?
